As both a cinematic co-op adventure and a proper RPG experience, the game has a lot of expectations to live up to. You’ve got a brand-new skill system to play with, plenty of weapons, countless foes in the zombie infection zone of Los Angeles and so many quests to play through as you destroy zombie hordes. We can confirm that the pulp tone and new gore systems work great together, adding a little bit of absurdity to a game about ripping people limb-from-limb as you tear dozens of distinct zombie types limb from limb, becoming the ultimate zombie slayer. Thanks to the folks over at Dambuster Studios, we were lucky enough to get hands-on with Dead Island 2 at Gamescom 2022. It’s always good to see a game leave development hell, but we’re still a little while off knowing whether it was a good idea to release Dead Island 2 from quarantine. The re-reveal trailer also shows off the dark humor of this world, with jokes flying back and forth even while the monsters of this twisted universe and the ongoing zombie infestation threaten to pull you apart. This time around, the 80s/pulp vibes are strong from the get-go, so we can at least hope that changes will be a little less jarring this time. There’s also been a big shake-up to the game’s tone, which is a welcome change after the confusion caused by the original game’s difference in tone between the trailer and the game. You can also play with friends in up to three-player co-op, giving the game a large amount of re-playability as you test out the abilities of each slayer. There’s a big focus on the new gore mechanics this time around, allowing you to chop zombies to pieces in ever-more-interesting ways. It took a little while, but we were lucky enough to get a re-reveal during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022, which showed off the first gameplay we’ve ever seen for the game. You can even check out our Gamescom 2022 awards page, where Dead Island 2 won our biggest comeback award. Is it going to work as poorly as Kinect did, or will it do more to make it work? We also know that you can use Alexa Game Control to explore the gore-drenched Los Angeles and meet the larger-than-life characters held within, though how well this is going to work also remains to be seen. The game was originally announced as coming to Google Stadia but since this announcement, Google Stadia has rather ironically died and shows no real signs of returning from the grave. The game itself will be launching across PC (through the Epic Games Store), Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5 systems.
